“This is one of the greatest sculptures ever created and it has inspired countless visitors who see it at St. Peter’s Basilica each year… To have the first marble casting of the original sculpture during the Lenten season has a special significance. While at St. Paul, thousands came to view this magnificent sculpture. Many attended special talks sponsored by the Cathedral. Others made a private visit on their own after Mass. Ultimately, the Cathedral couldn’t part with the sculpture and purchased it outright, thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor.”
